One of our best inventions in terms of fantasy football is our strength of schedule feature. While all sites produce a strength of schedule ranking it is simply based on wins and losses and doesn't offer a great deal of information or have much value for fantasy footballers. Our strength of schedule which again was invented here by myself, is one of the best weapons you can use on a weekly basis and could be the difference in why you draft one WR over another in the 7th round of your draft. Lets look at some examples this time focusing in on the NFC South.
Atlanta Falcons W/L In terms of W/L the Falcons have a very neutral schedule as the teams they will play this year finished around .500 last year, but lets look at the more important details. RYD SOS The Falcons have a fairly light schedule against the run ranking 19th overall, Turner will be able to unload against some weak run D's like the Browns, Bucs, Rams and Panthers twice. PYD SOS Matt Ryan and the Falcons face a very neutral schedule against the pass. There will be some easy matchups against the Browns, Saints and Rams, but some tougher matchups against the Bengals, Ravens and Packers.
Carolina Panthers W/L In terms of W/L the Panthers have a very neutral schedule as the teams they will play this year finished around .477 last year. RYD SOS Based on the schedule the Panthers run game should do very well with matchups against the Bucs, Bears and Rams. Stewart and Williams should be set for big years facing the 22nd overal run schedule. PYD SOS Good news for Matt Moore and the Panthers pass game that will face the 31st ranked schedule against the pass. So very good news for Steve Smith as well. The Saints and Falcons two weaker pass D's will be on the schedule twice. Expect a solid year from Matt Moore, keeping in mind this is a run first offense.
New Orleans Saints W/L In terms of W/L the Saints will face a schedule of teams under .500 so that is a favorable start. RYD SOS Could be a tougher year for the run game here, Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas will need to get it done against the 13th ranked run schedule. Tough games right off the bat against the Vikings, 49ers and Falcons run D. Then keep in mind some tough later matchups in what could be key playoff weeks. The Saints face the Ravens and Falcons in weeks 15 and 16. PYD SOS Brees and Co. are obvious no brainers in most matchups, but the schedule against the pass ranked 21st should be favorable overall.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers W/L In terms of W/L the Bucs have a very neutral schedule as the teams they will play this year finished around .500 last year. RYD SOS Carnell Williams and the Bucs have a pretty tough schedule against the run, so keep expectations low for the Bucs run game. They have tough matchups against the Steelers, Ravens, Falcons and Bengals. PYD SOS Lets face it you won't have a good fantasy team if you are counting on Josh Freeman or the Bucs passing attack, but they do face a very favorable schedule against the pass with the easiest or 32nd ranked schedule against the pass. Not much talent here so other than Winslow, keep expectations low.
Strength of Schedule is a regular feature available in Dr. Stats Fantasy Football Insider. Updated weekly during the season, it is a key tool in evaluating future player value and upcoming matchups. View a demo here |
